Education and Outreach Specialist
About me
Sherry Bryant, a native of Newport News, VA, has taught secondary social studies education including U.S. history, government, and civics and economics in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. During her time as an educator, Bryant prioritized integrating strategies that addressed the inclusion of marginalized narratives into history and social studies curricula. After leaving the classroom, Bryant served as the chief curator of education and digital humanities at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center in Charlottesville, where she designed and implemented educational programming and cross-curricular professional learning opportunities for K-12 educators in the Charlottesville City and Albemarle County School divisions that focused on local history and culturally responsive teaching practices.
She is currently an Education and Outreach Specialist at Youth-Nex, a center at the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia, where she works with youth leaders dedicated to promoting youth leadership and agency, civic engagement, and education equity as well as on a number of nationwide initiatives including Remaking Middle School, which intends to think about ways to redesign and restructure middle school in order to improve the experiences, engagement, and academic outcomes for adolescents in the middle grades.
