Tom Weithman is Chief Investment Officer for the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation and Managing Director of Virginia Venture Partners (VVP), a strategic investment platform pursuing complementary direct and indirect investment strategies to further the economic development objectives of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
As a direct allocator, Virginia Venture Partners has established a 20-year track record of generating exceptional returns and socio-economic impact for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Through VVP Fund of Funds, backs GPs aligned with VVP’s investment mission and committed to the development of Virginia's risk capital ecosystem.
As Chief Investment Officer, Weithman manages VVP's $175M+ venture capital allocation in support of the U.S. Treasury Department's SSBCI program, with oversight for all direct investments and fund of funds allocations.
Weithman is a proven operator, investor, director, executive and advisor with experience spanning federal, commercial and non-profit sectors. As architect and leader of Virginia Venture Partners, Weithman has is one of the nation's foremost experts on quasi-public fund formation, early stage investment, accelerator development and the contribution of "catalytic capital" to innovation, commercialization and economic development.
Through his work at Virginia Venture Funds and role as founder and Chief Investment Officer for MACH37, Weithman has gained recognition as a leading capital provider for cybersecurity start-ups with direct investment experience in more than 75 such companies.
Under Weithman's leadership, Virginia Venture Partners has placed more than 300 equity investments in emerging tech, life science and clean tech companies, leveraging almost 2 billion of private capital onto Virginia Venture Partners portfolio company balance sheets and propelling multiple companies to exit. Operating as CIT GAP Funds, Virginia Venture Funds has been acknowledged by Entrepreneur Magazine, CB Insights and the Association for Corporate Growth as one of the nation's leading early-stage venture funds.
