Inez M. Gonzalez was appointed Executive Director of the City of Charlottesville’s Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB) and began serving in that capacity effective May 1, 2023. Gonzalez is focused on increasing the public’s confidence in the Charlottesville Police Department through thorough, effective,and transparent investigations.
Director Gonzalez came to the City of Charlottesville with over 28 years of experience in urban policing.
Gonzalez joined the Newark, New Jersey Police Department in 1989, serving as a patrol officer in Newark’s South District Precinct. In 1991 she became a detective working in a variety of assignments including the Narcotics Division, Vice, Community Services Division, Homicide, and the Police Academy.
In 1997 Gonzalez was promoted to the rank of sergeant, becoming the first Hispanic woman to achieve rank in the history of the Newark Police Department. Her promotions in 2002 to the rank of lieutenant, and 2006 to the rank of captain, were also firsts in the city’s history.
Upon her promotion to captain, she was assigned as commander of the city’s 5th Police Precinct. Gonzalez has served as commander of the Safe City Task Force, Prisoner Processing Division, Communications Division, Inspectional Services Division, and the Office of Internal Affairs. Gonzalez’s decade-long Internal Affairs experience and reputation for possessing good judgement, objectivity, and integrity, allowed her to serve as the agency’s internal affairs subject matter expert.
Gonzalez holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a concentration in Homeland Security.
