Dr. Eric Weisel leads transformative research enterprises focused on digital technologies. A modeling and simulation (M&S) industry veteran, Dr. Weisel has held research leadership positions, over a span of twenty years, in academic, large-, and small-business technology operations. He holds an academic appointment as Senior Associate Vice President for Enterprise Research and Innovation at Old Dominion University (ODU) where he leads innovation, workforce development, and industry ecosystem engagement activities across six applied research centers spanning M&S, data analytics, autonomy, cybersecurity, mission engineering, and coastal resilience. Also at ODU, he previously served as Executive Director at the university’s Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC)—a $15M university enterprise research center performing cutting-edge research in M&S and data analytics. Prior to entering the technology research field, he served as a U.S. Navy submarine officer on Los Angeles class attack submarines and Navy staffs. Dr. Weisel is active in academic and industry service within the M&S and engineering technology communities—he has served on the Virginia Modeling and Simulation Advisory Council and Boards of Directors for the Society for Modeling & Simulation International and the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing; and contributes to the conference committee for I/ITSEC, the M&S community’s premier industry conference. He is a Senior Member of the Society for Modeling & Simulation International and has twice served as the Society’s Vice President for Education and Workforce Development.
