Wednesday April 16, 2025 9:30am - 11:30am EDT

REEL vs. REAL: Rediscovering Authentic Travel in a Digital World
Wednesday April 16, 2025 5:30pm - 7:00pm EDT

In an era when social media curates the perfect “instamoment,” how do we ensure that travel remains immersive, transformative, and real?
Join Christina Ball, founder of Speak! Language Center, as she moderates a vibrant conversation with:
  • Julie Arbelaez, 30-year travel agent and owner of Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters
  • Michelle Damiani, travel writer, trip leader and author of Il Bel Centro
  • Jaime Kurtz, JMU Psychology Professor and author of The Happy Traveler: Unpacking the Secrets of Better Vacations

Together, we’ll explore the evolving nature of travel—from passive sightseeing to experiences that foster real connection and cultural engagement.
We'll discuss:
  • How technology and digital storytelling have sparked a renewed hunger for authenticity
  • Ways to deepen travel through hands-on experiences like culinary walking tours, journaling, biking, and meeting local artisans
  • The challenge of decision paralysis in the age of information overload—and how to filter through the noise
  • Why it’s time to move beyond checklist tourism and curated itineraries to embrace slower, more soulful journeys

Come for the conversation, stay for the inspiration—and leave with practical ideas to make your next trip more personally meaningful.

College Behind Bars: The Restorative Power of Second Chances
Wednesday April 16, 2025 5:30pm - 7:30pm EDT

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) invites the community to an evening of discussion and film exploring incarceration, education, and the power of second chances. For nearly two decades, PVCC has been a leader in prison education, launching its first program at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women in 2006. Since then, the Higher Education in Prison Program has expanded to Dillwyn and Buckingham Correctional Centers, transforming the lives of over 150 graduates through quality post-secondary education.

The event will begin with a reading of student works from the PVCC Prison Creative Arts Program, offering a glimpse into the experiences and reflections of incarcerated learners. Following this, attendees will view College Behind Bars, the acclaimed Ken Burns documentary that highlights the impact of higher education in prison. The evening will conclude with a keynote address from Jesse Crosson of the Second Chancer Foundation, who will share his personal journey and advocate for the life-changing role of education in rehabilitation and reentry.

This event, held in recognition of Second Chance Month, aims to foster meaningful dialogue on the intersection of incarceration and education while celebrating the opportunities that learning can provide for individuals seeking a new path forward.

One Stop Shop: Reentry and Criminal Justice Reform Service Showcase
Thursday April 17, 2025 12:00pm - 3:00pm EDT

The "One-Stop Shop" (OSS) is a free event designed to support formerly incarcerated individuals by providing access to a wide range of services aimed at successful reintegration. The event features food, music, and resources from various agencies, including the Department of Social Services, OAR, Region Ten, Goodwill Industries, New Beginnings, and the Fountain Fund. These services cover medical and mental healthcare, substance abuse counseling, legal support, license reinstatement, financial literacy, career counseling, housing access, and educational opportunities.

Launched in response to Virginia's Earned Sentence Credit law, which allowed early release for eligible incarcerated individuals, the OSS event helps address the needs of those reentering the community. The Charlottesville Albemarle Reentry Council (CARC) recognized the challenges faced by these individuals and developed the OSS to ensure they have the support needed to reintegrate and avoid recidivism. The event is open to all community members in need, regardless of incarceration status.

Official After Party: La Luz with Color Green
Friday April 18, 2025 7:00pm - 10:00pm EDT

Starr Hill Presents brings you an Official After Party to the 13th Annual Tom Tom Festival:

Unashamedly vulnerable, unabashedly feminine, and undeniably triumphant, News of the Universe is another knockout record from La Luz, a band so reliably great that it has perhaps led people to overlook how pioneering they really are. As women of color in indie music, La Luz continues to forge their own path—following their artistic vision beyond fleeting musical trends, always guided by an earnest belief in the cosmic power of love and a great riff.

Never has that been more true than on News of the Universe, an album that stands as their most brutal yet blissful work to date. After everything, how could it not?

Tai Chi Open Session “6 Steps to Compassion” led by Hiromi Johnson
Saturday April 19, 2025 10:00am - 11:00am EDT

Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art that blends deliberate movement, breathwork, and mindfulness. With applications ranging from self-defense to meditation, Tai Chi is both a physical practice and a meditative journey that cultivates balance, awareness, and inner peace. Beyond its individual benefits, Tai Chi has deep roots in community practice, offering a unique way to connect with others through shared movement and intentional presence.

In this workshop, Hiromi Johnson of Charlottesville Tai Chi will guide participants through a practice centered on communal healing and collective consciousness. Through slow, mindful movements, we will explore how intentional motion can foster a sense of unity, grounding us in both our own bodies and in the energy of those around us. This practice encourages a deepened awareness of self and community, helping us to move with greater ease, connection, and harmony.

Cville Jane's Walk

This guided walk through Charlottesville’s streets and neighborhoods invites participants to observe the built environment through the lens of classical virtues—truth, beauty, and justice—or Vitruvius’ principles of firmness, commodity, and delight. By engaging with the city’s architecture and urban spaces, attendees will explore how design shapes community identity, equity, and sustainability.

The walk will highlight the essential role of public participation in shaping a city's future, emphasizing that meaningful community input fosters trust and investment in physical change. Additionally, it will examine how public trust in government and institutions depends on their ability to deliver tangible, equitable, and sustainable improvements. Through this immersive experience, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between visioning, development, and the shared responsibility of creating a just and beautiful city.

Planting for the Past, Present, and Future: An Interactive Workshop on Bringing Local Biodiversity Back to the Landscape

In the midst of an expansive no-mow area of Darden Towe Park, a pocket of native wildflowers and grasses are emerging from winter dormancy, eager to meet the sun. We invite you to join us as we prepare and plant the remainder of the first phase of an ambitious restoration project that urges us, as a community, to reconsider our relationship with the land and organisms we live with. Prompted by the dream of a Peabody student, this is a public restoration of one of Eastern North America’s most diverse yet forgotten ecosystems: the Piedmont grassland.

Learn the methods we have been using, the plants that are native and natural in this grassland ecosystem, the obstacles we have encountered, and how you can do this at home or in your community. Or, simply spend some time seeing the magic and biodiversity that has returned to the restored space. This will be a hands-on workshop guided by Piedmont Discovery Center and Peabody students, who will share plant ID cards, information for obtaining native, local genotype seeds and plugs, and tips for how to get started in your own space. Local genotype plants will also be for sale!

If traveling by car, please park by the soccer fields or pickleball courts.
The GPS points for the restoration are 38.040847, -78.448991.

Laughter Therapy: An Interactive Workshop on How to Live Joyfully Together
Saturday April 19, 2025 11:45am - 12:45pm EDT

This interactive session invites participants to tap into the power of laughter for a joyful and rejuvenating experience. Beginning with a reflective question on moments of pure joy, attendees will explore the distinction between joy as an internal state and happiness as an external reaction. The session will then introduce the fascinating origins of laughter yoga, a practice developed by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995, which uses intentional laughter to release feel-good hormones, strengthen connections, and enhance overall well-being. A short guided visualization will help participants reconnect with their inner child and embrace playfulness before diving into laughter yoga techniques.

The heart of the experience will be 30–40 minutes of immersive, laughter-inducing exercises interspersed with breathing breaks. Through playful clapping rhythms, chanting, eye contact exercises, and imaginative scenarios, participants will engage in uninhibited laughter, unlocking a deeper sense of connection and joy. The session will conclude with a group reflection, inviting attendees to share insights and discover ways to integrate laughter into their daily lives. Whether seeking stress relief, renewed energy, or simply a reason to smile, this uplifting gathering offers a communal space for shared joy and connection.
