Eight Winemakers, Eight Stories, Eight Minutes With Each: A Virginia Wine Tasting Experience
Monday March 17, 2025 6:00pm - 8:00pm EDT
Enjoy an intimate wine tasting as you move in small groups around the room to visit each winemaker table.  At each table, you will have the opportunity to share a glass of wine and discussion with the winemaker before moving to the next table.

There’s a lot happening in the Virginia wine scene. Wine Enthusiast magazine recently named the Monticello Wine Trail the Wine Region of the Year. The region is a hotbed for innovation and the home of many independent winemakers.  We look forward to bringing some of these independent winemakers together in one room for an evening of wine tasting and conversation.

Last year, we hosted a panel discussion in conjunction with the Tom Tom Festival, entitled “The Many Faces of Virginia Wine.” Panelists shared their stories and discussed increasing opportunities in the Virginia Wine Industry and the importance of building our collective future in a diverse and inclusive way.

This is an exciting follow up to that event. This year, we look forward to a new format designed to increase opportunities for conversation, wine tasting, and community. Guests will have an opportunity to participate in small groups, spending time with each winemaker and seed stage entrepreneur to learn about some of the growing pathways to ownership, diversity and inclusion.

This event requires pre-registration. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here. This event is 21+

Please arrive by no later than 5:15 pm if you would like to enjoy dinner before the event. Eastwood’s full menu will be available until 5:30. Program will start promptly at 6pm.

Common House: OG's of Oregon Wine Tasting & Seminar
Tuesday March 18, 2025 6:30pm - 8:30pm EDT
How many legends of the wine industry can we get into one room at the same time? At least three! Join us for a panel discussion co-hosted by Jay McDonald of EIEIO wines and Bill Curtis of Tasting’s Wine Shop. What’s more? It will be mediated by beloved Somm Erin Scala.

Bill Curtis, although he lives in Charlottesville, has extremely deep roots and strong, life long bonds to the wines of Oregon and the personalities behind them. Jay McDonald is a colorful character who makes some of the best wines on earth from a quiet, understated and isolated winery in the Willamette Valley. Would you be surprised to know the two are old friends? When Jay booked his trip to Virginia I knew we had to get them together. Erin Scala is a local, widely loved industry personality and is the perfect person to ask thought provoking, meaningful questions. She is not only an expert of wine, but an expert of discussion and has a special talent to extract the best stories and the best qualities of the people around her.

We will of course be tasting the wines as well. Jay (known to be one of the best winemakers) and Bill (known to be one of the best wine tasters) are teaming up to guide you through a lively tasting that is sure to be special. This is guaranteed to be as fun, and informative as it is delicious.

Tickets are $30 for members and $45 for non-member guests.

This event requires pre-registration for non-CH members: OG's of Oregon Wine Tasting & Seminar

Prolyfyck Community Walk & Run with Special Guest, UVA President Jim Ryan
Wednesday March 19, 2025 5:50am - 7:00am EDT
Lace-up your shoes and take to the streets for a fun run with the Prolyfyck run crew in support of a unified community where representation and inclusion matter. Prolyfycks’ mindset centers around community and abundance, rather than competition.  Whether you come alone or with a group, you will receive an abundance of encouragement, support, and love along the way! Run together, not against each other!

For this event at Tom Tom Festival, the walk and run will feature a special guest, UVA President Jim Ryan, an avid community runner!

At the end of the run, participants will circle up for announcements, community support, recognition of new folx, and finally to let some rage out (release any internal energy/emotion flowing in the body through yelling) before the close of the event.

Walkers will begin at 5:50 AM, followed by runners at 6 AM.

Please bring a water bottle.

Thriving Together Through Collective Rest and Recovery
Wednesday March 19, 2025 12:00pm - 1:30pm EDT
Join us for a time of community rest and recovery. This session will focus on a gentle and relaxing style of yoga that utilizes props such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks to support the body in comfortable and restful postures. This session is designed to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and promote deep relaxation. Each “pose” is held for an extended period of time (usually 5-10 minutes) to allow the body to fully release tension and ease into a state of relaxation. We are not stretching the body into poses, we are simply giving space for rest.  This session is suitable for all levels, including beginners, and is especially beneficial for those recovering from injury or illness, managing chronic pain, or looking to reduce stress and anxiety. Join us for a calming and rejuvenating experience that is designed to leave you feeling refreshed and renewed.

Please wear comfortable clothing. You may also bring personal props (optional): blanket, bolster, yoga mat, blocks.

Thursday March 20, 2025 8:00am - 12:00pm EDT
Farmers Markets are great examples of community and entrepreneurs working together.
As a local, producer-only farmers market, each vendor at the Farmers Market at Ix is an entrepreneur,
growing, making, baking or producing their own products. The management is provided by the
nonprofit Market Central and the ambiance comes from the Ix Art Park. With the public as the third
partner, we all work together to create a public market that supports local farms, food and arts, in
return for healthy food, a boost in our economy, better environmental outcomes, and the social
camaraderie associated with sharing food and culture.

On April 20, take part in the Market at Ix Scavenger Hunt to find specific vendors and their products as
examples of entrepreneurs who enrich the community with special foods and art while creating self-

There will be guided hikes, a scavenger hunt for kids, snacks, and information galore. Join us in celebration and communion as we connect with this land, with those who devote themselves to tending to it, and with each other. Together we will honor life in all its mysteries and complexities!

Charlottesville's Sister Cities: Mapping and Drawing Our Relationships
Thursday March 20, 2025 10:00am - 4:00pm EDT
The Sister Cities Commission 2024 Project, “Mapping and Art: Teaching the Geography of the Sister Cities through Art,” brings the Charlottesville community closer TOGETHER with our sister cities, Besançon, France, Poggio a Caiano, Italy, Winneba, Ghana, and Huehuetenango, Guatemala. We will be offering walk-in Mapping and Art workshops for the Tom Tom Festival, where festival participants can make an installation together that maps out Charlottesville’s connections to the Sister Cities using drawings, photographs, writing, string, clothesline, recipes, the languages of the Sister Cities, and mementos. The installation and its maker’s spaces will take up an entire room and will be a 3-D representation of relationships that we make TOGETHER. Printed materials, such as street maps, bilingual dictionaries, and guide books, will also be used. The clothesline forms are inspired by Somé Louis, an artist and dancer who uses string, movement, sticks, and clothesline to map places and reactions to landscapes. Louis is one of the designated workshop leaders for the project’s inclusion in area schools.

Participants will begin by making a hand-drawn map of the world using only their memories. Afterwards, we will see what we have added or omitted, discussing the map of the world we hold within us. Next, we will experience forming collages out of photographs, a sister city artform by photographer Stacey Evans. Evans worked with students in Besançon and in Charlottesville to produce merged views of the two cities.

From there, participants will make sketches, taking a walk out by the Rivanna River. Upon return, they will add to the art installation, using resources and materials provided. The result will be a 3-D representation we can walk under and over, and collages we can assemble and reconfigure.

All ages are welcome.

Creature Couture Workshop for the SW2 Festival of the Moving Creature: Session 1
Thursday March 20, 2025 11:00am - 1:00pm EDT
Join us for an enchanting prelude to SW2 Festival of the Moving Creature.

As the excitement builds for the grand parade on April 26th, dive into the magic early with our "Creature Couture Workshops" on April 20th at Live Arts from 11:00 AM - 1:00PM and 1:00PM - 3:00 PM as a part of the Tom Tom Festival.

The SW2 Festival will showcase two giant puppeted Creatures from UVA’s Art of the Moving Creature class.
At this special pre-festival event, unleash your inner designer and craft your very own beastly embellishment to become an integral part of one of our creature’s entourages. Whether a wearable headpiece or black light lantern, we invite all community members to come to this workshop and make a piece to parade alongside the mesmerizing creatures as they roam the UVA Grounds, your creation adding a splash of magic to the spectacle of mythical marvels!

Inspired by the festival’s namesakes Stan Winston–UVA alumnus and Hollywood creature maker– and Steven Warner–beloved UVA Drama Technical Director and co-founder of the original festival– these community creature entourages will celebrate their legacy in style and joy during a night of wonder and excitement.
Appropriate for all ages, come as you are and let's make some magic together!

The SW2 Festival of the Moving Creature is sponsored by UVA Arts, The Jefferson Trust, an Initiative of the UVA Alumni Association, the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, UVA Department of Drama, and the UVA School of Architecture.

Know Better: Deepening the Bonds of Communal Life w. David Brooks and Melody Barnes
Friday March 21, 2025 3:00pm - 4:20pm EDT
Theological Horizons is thrilled to announce that renowned author and New York Times commentator David Brooks will deliver the 3rd annual Scoper Lecture in Christian Thought in Old Cabell Hall on April 21, 2024 at the University of Virginia: the anchor event of an in person and livestreamed community-wide, intergenerational experience.

David Brooks will speak on the topic “Know Better: Deepening the Bonds of Communal Life” drawing on the themes of his new book, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen and exploring his sources in Christian thought. The academic lecture will illuminate Brooks’s foundational work on the complexities and urgencies of living well in a democratic society.

Melody Barnes, Executive Director of UVA’s Karsh Institute of Democracy, will then join Brooks onstage to investigate the implications of Brooks’s premise that “there is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person...or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.”

The onstage lecture and conversation will be framed by music from The Porter’s Gate, a sacred ecumenical arts collective whose projects include “Neighbor Songs” and “Table Songs.”

A Charlottesville Welcome Table reception for all lecture guests will follow outdoors from 4:45-5:45 PM in the UVA Amphitheater!
