Technology for Good Track
Monday March 17, 2025 8:00am - 8:15am EDT
How do technology, entrepreneurship, and investment increase opportunity in the community?

Charlottesville’s technology sector is one of the region’s most vibrant areas of economic opportunity; and a source of global innovation and ideas. This conference is a state of the union for Charlottesville Tech, mixing it up with all the players in some sectors including biotechnolgy, energy, and data, and AI, and assesses how these innovators are driving global change. The conference also looks at Diversity in the sectors -- from a workforce and cultural perspective --- ensuring that there are multiple voices shaping decisions, as well as the funding cycles.

So whether you're looking for insights into some of the most relevant global trends, the ethics around data and AI, or some of the hottest emerging Charlottesville companies, this is a conference for you.

Note: This conference session is a ticketed event. To create your event schedule here on Sched you must first purchase your tickets on Eventbrite. Click here to purchase your tickets. Technology for Good | Keynote: So Where Are We With AI? The Holy S*#t Talk
Monday March 17, 2025 9:15am - 9:30am EDT
"As we stand on the cusp of what feels like science fiction becoming reality, the journey from here is charged with both promise and responsibility." - GPT4

One year ago, ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion exploded onto the scene and shocked the world into a new revolution. Overnight, AI became a word used in every household and every one scrambled (and continues to scramble) to understand how AI will impact their personal lives, their companies, their schools, and the broader world around them. Since then, things have only accelerated.

In this lightning talk, we'll explore where AI is now, and how it's affecting economics, politics, art, energy, health care, entertainment, and study. We'll explore what part of the hockey stick we appear to be sitting on, and what to expect in the coming months and years. Though this talk will focus on the big picture, we'll of course have to geek out a little on some of the new tech and platforms coming out that you should be considering leveraging (like LangChain, Sora, ChatGPT 5, and Claude 3, to name a few). Finally, we'll bump into some of the biggest concerns we face as a human race, such as the alignment problem, the loss of livelihoods, and the challenge of being in a world changing hyper rapidly around us.

Note: This conference session is a ticketed event. To create your event schedule here on Sched you must first purchase your tickets on Eventbrite. Click here to purchase your tickets. All Conference badges also have a Pay-What-You-Can Scholarship Option. This option is available for attendees in need of financial assistance to attend the conference.

Eight Winemakers, Eight Stories, Eight Minutes With Each: A Virginia Wine Tasting Experience
Monday March 17, 2025 6:00pm - 8:00pm EDT
Enjoy an intimate wine tasting as you move in small groups around the room to visit each winemaker table.  At each table, you will have the opportunity to share a glass of wine and discussion with the winemaker before moving to the next table.

There’s a lot happening in the Virginia wine scene. Wine Enthusiast magazine recently named the Monticello Wine Trail the Wine Region of the Year. The region is a hotbed for innovation and the home of many independent winemakers.  We look forward to bringing some of these independent winemakers together in one room for an evening of wine tasting and conversation.

Last year, we hosted a panel discussion in conjunction with the Tom Tom Festival, entitled “The Many Faces of Virginia Wine.” Panelists shared their stories and discussed increasing opportunities in the Virginia Wine Industry and the importance of building our collective future in a diverse and inclusive way.

This is an exciting follow up to that event. This year, we look forward to a new format designed to increase opportunities for conversation, wine tasting, and community. Guests will have an opportunity to participate in small groups, spending time with each winemaker and seed stage entrepreneur to learn about some of the growing pathways to ownership, diversity and inclusion.

This event requires pre-registration. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here. This event is 21+

Please arrive by no later than 5:15 pm if you would like to enjoy dinner before the event. Eastwood’s full menu will be available until 5:30. Program will start promptly at 6pm.

******************************************************************************************
If you plan to attend only free events at Tom Tom and would still like to build your schedule here on Sched, please go to Eventbrite and select the free ticket labeled “Create Your Personal Schedule”. Once you complete the ticketing process, you’ll receive an email from Sched prompting you to create an account and then build your schedule.

Entrepreneurship For All | The Future of the Trades: Why Plumbing, HVAC, and Carpentry are the Biggest Opportunities for Entrepreneurs
Tuesday March 18, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
In an era dominated by technology and automation, the timeless artistry of the trades holds a unique allure for entrepreneurs. The trades are also one of the highest paying careers that young people can pursue, and offer tremendous entrepreneurial opportunity. Join us for a dynamic session as we delve into "The Future of the Trades" and explore why working with your hands matters now more than ever -- and how to better tell that story to aspiring entrepreneurs.

Because while lucrative, studying for a trade -- carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or HVAC -- can be seen as “less than” a college education and a more white-collar job. However, the trades offer a rewarding and accessible pipeline to career success, and are often one of the entrepreneurial paths that are easiest to enter.

Entrepreneurship For All | The Role of the University in the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
Tuesday March 18, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Universities can play a significant role in advancing their local entrepreneurial ecosystems.  In this session, we will discuss the myriad of ways that universities interface with their communities with a focus on the role of academic research, technology transfer, and student and alumni venturing.

We will also explore the synergies between local entrepreneurship support organizations and university venture support efforts and debate the proper balance between the two. While our focus will be broadly on the role of universities, we will highlight UVA and Charlottesville as a specific case study of this broader phenomenon.

Entrepreneurship For All | Entrepreneurship and the Future of Charlottesville: A Facilitated Conversation with Regional Leaders
Tuesday March 18, 2025 3:30pm - 4:30pm EDT
**INVITATION ONLY**

At the very first TomTom Festival in 2012, we convened a panel to discuss the future of Charlottesville. We asked the provocative question whether Charlottesville will look more like Austin (TX), Aspen (CO), or Arlington (VA). Nearly a decade later, we think it worthwhile to revisit this question.

This “discussion in the round” on the role of entrepreneurship in Charlottesville’s future, will be run “Darden case style” by asking questions and encouraging conversation among the participants. There will be no presentations or extended comments.

Due to space limitations, this will be an invitation only event.

A Bridge to Life - Film Screening
Tuesday March 18, 2025 7:00pm - 9:30pm EDT
From celebrated director Chris Farina comes a documentary about the power of overcoming hardship, building community, and remaining resilient. A Bridge to Life is a portrait of an organization that for years has been working to change and save the lives of men dealing with life-threatening addiction issues. The men receive intensive job-training skills along with psychological and spiritual mentoring to give them a chance to return to society as successful community and family members.

Interwoven throughout this film is the inspiring story of William Washington, the founder and Executive Director of the Bridge Ministry. Having suffered serious trauma as a child, this led to him becoming a homeless teenager on the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, as both a user and seller of deadly drugs. He was incarcerated more than once, and while eventually facing a long-term prison sentence, he was given a chance by a compassionate judge to enter a program that positively altered his life. Uplifted by this experience, he dedicated his own life to helping others who faced the same troubled path that he had been on. This led to his creation of the Bridge Ministry, in 1996, which is a much better alternative than incarceration to deal with our country’s serious crisis of drug addiction.

Founded in 1996 by William Washington, The Bridge Ministry emerged from his transformative journey during a long-term jail sentence. Overcoming addiction, he initiated community meetings within the jail and extended his home and support to troubled men and families in need. The organization has since provided a second chance for men committed to breaking free from life controlling issues, by providing mentoring, vocational skills, education, counseling, and the relationships they need to bridge the gap from addiction to productive community and family life.

Following the film, a discussion and Q&A will occur with Chris Farina, William Washington, and individuals who have been impacted by the ministry.

Society & Justice | What’s the Answer to Affordable Housing: A Look Into New Zoning, Community Land Trusts, and Other Innovative Solutions
Wednesday March 19, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am EDT
Access to affordable housing is a cornerstone of an equitable city. This session delves into actionable strategies aimed at fostering greater inclusivity and affordability within the housing market. Led by a panel of experts across sectors -- urban planning, legal, and community development -- this session offers an illuminating exploration into the multi-faceted approach required to address the pressing issue of affordable housing.

Topics will include Charlottesville’s newly adopted zoning policy, aimed specifically to densify the city and provide more housing to the community. What will be the challenges encountered in implementing this vision? This panel will explore the nexus of zoning regulations, development patterns, and other innovative solutions -- like land trusts -- that are tailored to the specific needs of Charlottesville.

Society & Justice | Homelessness: On Our Own Charlottesville
Wednesday March 19, 2025 1:15pm - 2:15pm EDT
Homelessness is a pressing issue, both globally and within our local community. With over half a million people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States, it's time for us to confront this crisis head-on. In this session, we will shed light on the stark realities faced by our unhoused community members, challenging us to reflect on the values of compassion and equity in our society.

Former Charlottesville Mayor and affordable housing advocate, Dave Norris, along with other members of the local affordable housing advocacy community, will lead the conversation, urging us to take action. Together, we will explore practical solutions and advocate for the construction of more shelters, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of such initiatives compared to hospitalizations for unhoused individuals. Join us as we come together to raise awareness, drive change, and stand in solidarity with our unhoused friends and neighbors.

Society & Justice | Community Based Healthcare: How Can We Align Our Community Health Needs Assessment with Powerful Storytelling?
Wednesday March 19, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm EDT
Every three years, the Blue Ridge Health District, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, and UVA Health collaborate to conduct a comprehensive community health needs assessment. This assessment serves as a critical tool in identifying factors that either foster or impede wellness within our community, while highlighting the resources needed to address health disparities and overcome obstacles for the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson Counties.

We invite journalists, policy makers, and regional health leaders to join us to learn more about the health of our community and hear firsthand from the people leading improvement initiatives. Together we’ll explore the power of storytelling—to inspire engagement, support equitable initiatives, and uphold the dignity and agency of our community members most affected by these efforts. Let’s uncover our collective potential to raise awareness about this vital work and improve health here at home.

Healing the individual; healing the collective -- tomorrow’s Charlottesville starts with each of our journeys.

As our opening track, this conference takes us on an intellectual and an experiential journey through healing. We all experience suffering in our lives – physical ailments, mental stress, emotional pain, societal pressures – and it’s up to us to decide how we handle it. The process of understanding, accepting, forgiving, and ultimately healing ourselves is a lifelong journey. How can you experience wholeness and happiness on an ongoing basis?

We explore a variety of proven ways we can heal ourselves and increase our awareness and happiness -- from meditation and mindfulness to plant medicines (inc. psychedelics) and guided practices such as counseling, yoga, energy healing, hypnosis, and more. Along the way, we will explore ideas about what is meant by “consciousness,” whether any part of your consciousness might survive death, how to bring more awareness to all parts of your life, and how you can meaningfully increase joy and fulfillment in your day-to-day activities and truly flourish.

Conscious City | Exploring Interconnection: What Out-of-Body Experiences and Non-Ordinary States of Awareness Tell Us About Our Common Humanity
Thursday March 20, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
Extraordinary human experiences, such as near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences, and after-death communication, among others, often have enduring and profound effects on those who undergo them. These experiences can lead to significant positive transformations on an individual level, including heightened spirituality, reduced fear of death, and increased prosocial behaviors such as empathy and altruism. In addition, these individual transformations hold the potential to impact society in profound ways as they would require a shift in worldview regarding the nature of our reality, suggesting that we are more interconnected than the current scientific view assumes.

The Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at the University of Virginia School of Medicine stands out as one of the rare academic units globally dedicated to the scientific exploration of these extraordinary experiences. In this panel discussion, DOPS researchers will discuss the significance of investigating these exceptional phenomena for individuals and society. They will explore how these experiences can act as catalysts for fostering a future of greater human togetherness and connection.

Conscious City | The Myth of the Maternal Instinct
Thursday March 20, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
The panel will discuss the journey of pregnancy, birth, and strengthening families. Safety and connection are essential parts of the quality of life. As a need required by all humans since the beginning of mankind, security affects nearly all aspects of human life and is therefore considered an "anthropological constant". Safety and connection are characterized as elementary human needs that require fulfillment.

Those needs play an important role in the mother and child's overall pregnancy and birth experience. Security is revealed in one's own resources and in feelings of comfort, calmness, joy, positive self-awareness, and confidence that everything will go well.

Nature has perfected a system, through millions of years, to facilitate childbirth. It's important to recognize how society has changed and western medicine has evolved. Does the current environment impede the process? The panelists will discuss how parenting includes our lived and embodied experience. It's necessary to create an environment that allows more presence and connection. The well-being of a community depends on strong and loving families.

Conscious City | Without Apology: The Reclamation of Self-Care
Thursday March 20, 2025 11:15am - 12:15pm EDT
To reclaim is to retrieve or recover; obtain the return of, get back, take back. An apology is an expression of regret; a wish to undo or shrink back in. In this clarifying and empowering Saturday session with Yolonda Coles Jones, community teacher and founder of The RESTORE Project, participants are received in Love, with soul, expansive breath and grounding.

Settle in by way of Yolonda’s signature, beginner-friendly contemplative practices and then get ready to unpack, reframe and re-imagine the co-opted concept of “self-care” into something that feels more accessible, more possible and more adaptable to you and your everyday life: unapologetic whole-being well-being. (You will absolutely want to be ready to take notes.)

Conscious City | Psychedelics & Meditation: Philosophical & Cultural Perspectives
Thursday March 20, 2025 12:30pm - 1:30pm EDT
Throughout human history, seekers have experimented with ways to expand their minds and enhance their wellbeing. Practices of ingesting psychedelic substances or applying meditative techniques have been employed by humans for thousands of years. Most recently, over the past several decades, there is a significant body of research that is describing mystical experiences that emerge from psychedelics and meditation. Such mystical or spiritual experiences are rated by those who have undergone such experiences as among the most significant experiences in their lives. Contemplative traditions from around the world have developed incredibly diverse practices to transform human consciousness and induce flourishing, and in parallel, Indigenous peoples have cultivated sacred settings and practices for ingesting psychedelics.

Given these vast contexts and shared experiences, this panel explores consonance and difference with psychedelics and meditation from historical, philosophical, and cultural perspectives. We discuss how psychedelics and meditation induce mystical experiences, the importance of mindset and community, the potential cultural impact of psychedelic medicines, and how such human transformations make sense in the modern world.

Conscious City | Science of Psychedelics: What’s Next In Charlottesville
Thursday March 20, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm EDT
The past twenty years have shown an exponential growth in scientific research on the effects of psychedelics. This research has begun to change popular stigmas about psychedelics to position these substances as medicines to treat a broad range of disorders and enhance human life. Psychedelic-assisted therapies are applied to ameliorate stress and anxiety, chronic pain, depression, insomnia, addiction, and substance abuse. Brain science is discovering that consistent changes in neural networks activated under the influence of psychedelic substances yield meaningful brain plasticity. Such increased growth and reorganization of brain networks allows for increased learning and healing. Medical and scientific researchers are just beginning to understand the potential therapeutic effects of psychedelic medicines for the mind and brain.

This panel explores the emerging scientific research on psychedelics and the impact of this research on clinical and therapeutic applications. You will gain more knowledge on how psychedelic medicines are being studied as interventions for long-term grief and chronic pain, relevance of psychedelics for the local community, and potential futures of scientific psychedelics research.

Conscious City | Synchronicity for Spiritual Awakening and Social Change
Thursday March 20, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm EDT
Meaningful coincidences provide a lived and felt experience of being deeply intertwined with other people, animals and nature. The spiritual and ethical implication of being interconnected and interdependent with other beings leads us to an awakening, and to a wish for positive actions to improve the quality of life for and with others. In this way, spiritual awakening can inspire and lead the way for us to build a more sustainable and peaceful world.

Imagine synchronicity as the 'new currency' of Charlottesville, uniting us and expanding our spiritual awareness. Envision a Conscious City where synchronicity inspires us to bring about positive change in our community and help us to build a more sustainable and peaceful world.

This panel discussion reveals how synchronicity contributes to expanding consciousness and our experience of the spiritual/numinous dimension of existence, as well as how it can serve as a guide for making positive change, individually and collectively.

Know Better: Deepening the Bonds of Communal Life w. David Brooks and Melody Barnes
Friday March 21, 2025 3:00pm - 4:20pm EDT
Theological Horizons is thrilled to announce that renowned author and New York Times commentator David Brooks will deliver the 3rd annual Scoper Lecture in Christian Thought in Old Cabell Hall on April 21, 2024 at the University of Virginia: the anchor event of an in person and livestreamed community-wide, intergenerational experience.

David Brooks will speak on the topic “Know Better: Deepening the Bonds of Communal Life” drawing on the themes of his new book, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen and exploring his sources in Christian thought. The academic lecture will illuminate Brooks’s foundational work on the complexities and urgencies of living well in a democratic society.

Melody Barnes, Executive Director of UVA’s Karsh Institute of Democracy, will then join Brooks onstage to investigate the implications of Brooks’s premise that “there is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person...or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.”

The onstage lecture and conversation will be framed by music from The Porter’s Gate, a sacred ecumenical arts collective whose projects include “Neighbor Songs” and “Table Songs.”

A Charlottesville Welcome Table reception for all lecture guests will follow outdoors from 4:45-5:45 PM in the UVA Amphitheater!
