About me
The UVA Art of the Moving Creature Class is an interdisciplinary class hosted by the UVA Department of Drama and the School of Architecture. Originally founded in 2012 by the shop managers of the UVA Arts Grounds departments with partnership by the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, Creatures first came to Grounds in 2013 in a vibrant parade for the Festival of the Moving Creature, now the SW2 Festival. New creature designs return this year to honor the festival’s namesakes Stan Winston, Hollywood special effects legend and UVA alum, and late UVA Drama Assistant Professor Steven Warner, a co-founder of the original festival and longtime teacher of the Creature class. The Creature Class aims to teach students about collaborative design-build projects, material experimentation, and bringing their ideas to life to come together and spread joy to their community through public performance. This year's Festival will be on Friday evening, April 26th at UVA Arts Grounds. The SW2 Festival is sponsored by UVA Arts, The Jefferson Trust, an initiative of the UVA Alumni Association, the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, the UVA Department of Drama, and the UVA School of Architecture.
