About me
reen Dogs Unleashed is an all-volunteer organization specializing in the training, adoption, and care for blind, deaf, and difficult-to-place future pets. The concept for the organization grew as a result of someone discarding an object in the yard of Green Dogs Unleashed founder, Erika Procter. That object turned out to be a Great Dane puppy that could not hear or see.
In the following week, four separate veterinarians told Erika that this dog could live, but would have severely reduced quality of life, and that the humane thing to do for this animal would be to euthanize her. Erika refused this offer and refused to believe that pets with disabilities could not live happy, fulfilling lives. Serendipity grew to be a healthy, happy dog, much like any other pet. She learned all of the basic and advanced obedience skills that could be expected. She continued on to earn her therapy dog certification and worked with Erika to touch the lives of countless children through therapy visits. Serendipity’s story continues to be the inspiration for all that Green Dogs Unleashed is and strives to be. She is the heart and soul of everything that the rescue modeled their practices after: Rescuing, Rehabilitation, and Re-Homing of special needs animals.
Green Dogs Unleashed funds their work toward a public awareness campaign for deaf and blind dogs as pets as well as serving as an umbrella certification and insuring agency for therapy dog teams across Central Virginia through offering training classes ranging from obedience to therapy dog training to nose work and canine fitness.
