Civic Futures Track
Wednesday April 16, 2025 8:00am - 8:15am EDT
What is the Big Vision for our community? Join a multi-sector gathering designed to ignite visionary thinking and inclusive regional storytelling.

The EVOLVE Conference launches with a day-long exploration of how we build the relational capital and community cohesion, to envision and shape the future of our hometown. CIVIC FUTURES is a pioneering multi-sector gathering designed to inspire bold regional storytelling rooted in inclusion, creativity, and innovation.

This full-day event unites changemakers from diverse sectors—private industry, government, philanthropy, academia, and institutions—into a dynamic, creative space. Through interactive dialogue we’ll explore: What could our region be known for? And What coalitions and partnerships are essential to getting us there?

Together, we’ll co-create a roadmap for the region’s identity and growth, paving the way for meaningful action.

Themes:
  • Democracy 2026 - As Charlottesville and the nation approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we have a unique opportunity to reflect on the evolving promise of democracy in one of the cradles of the American story.
  • The Innovation Economy - What if Charlottesville were known as an innovation destination? This theme explores the intersection of technology, workforce development, and investment, highlighting an economy that fosters bold ideas and shared opportunity.
  • Big Vision & Regional Storytelling - A region’s identity is shaped by the stories it tells to others, and to itself. How can we craft a narrative that authentically represents our community’s past and present, while inspiring collaboration toward a vibrant future.
  • Coalitions and Collaboration - Transformative change doesn’t happen in silos—it requires trust, friendship, and deep collaboration across sectors, institutions, and communities. How can we build action-oriented coalitions that tackle our biggest challenges?

Civic Futures | Education Innovator Summit: Bringing a Community Schools Mindset to Charlottesville
Wednesday April 16, 2025 10:15am - 12:15pm EDT
Co-Hosted with City of Promise and African American Teaching Fellows (AATF)

This Session is by invitation only

Education Innovators Summit: What would a “Community School” mindset mean for Charlottesville?
The Education Innovation forum brings together diverse stakeholders to discuss how we leverage a Community School model to address noted and growing educational disparities between minority and under-resourced students and their peers in Charlottesville and Albemarle.

Nationally, Community Schools are public schools that provide services and support that fit each neighborhood’s needs. They are created and run by the people who know our children best—all working together. A Community Schools mindset speaks to a mentality of building coalitions and collaboration between all the diverse organizations caring for our kids inside and and outside of the school building.

This forum poses the question: what would Community Schools look like in Charlottesville? The multidisciplinary gathering brings together community stakeholders and local, mission-aligned organizations representing key social service agencies, government agencies, philanthropic institutions, community members, and research institutes with a stake in addressing poverty and educational engagement of children and families in Charlottesville.

Civic Futures | Charlottesville’s Narrative: Who Shapes Our Story?
Wednesday April 16, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
This session is presented proudly in partnership with the Charlottesville Office of Economic Development.

As Charlottesville again takes the national stage ahead of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, how can the region define and amplify a brand of inclusive innovation? This panel will explore the evolving narrative of Charlottesville—who tells its story, how it is perceived both locally and nationally, and what opportunities lie ahead. This conversation will examine how media, technology, and community voices can shape an identity that reflects both Charlottesville’s complex history and its bold vision for the future.

Featuring Tobias Dengel (WillowTree), Sarad Davenport (Vinegar Hill Magazine), and Jayme Swain (Virginia PBS), with moderation by Michael Lenox (UVA Innovates), the conversation will feature leading private sector innovators, national media experts, and local voices who have shaped the media and social sector landscapes.

REEL vs. REAL: Rediscovering Authentic Travel in a Digital World
Wednesday April 16, 2025 5:30pm - 7:00pm EDT

In an era when social media curates the perfect “instamoment,” how do we ensure that travel remains immersive, transformative, and real?
Join Christina Ball, founder of Speak! Language Center, as she moderates a vibrant conversation with:
  • Julie Arbelaez, 30-year travel agent and owner of Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters
  • Michelle Damiani, travel writer, trip leader and author of Il Bel Centro

We'll discuss:
  • How technology and digital storytelling have sparked a renewed hunger for authenticity
  • Ways to deepen travel through hands-on experiences like culinary walking tours, journaling, biking, and meeting local artisans
  • The challenge of decision paralysis in the age of information overload—and how to filter through the noise

College Behind Bars: The Restorative Power of Second Chances
Wednesday April 16, 2025 5:30pm - 7:30pm EDT

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) invites the community to an evening of discussion and film exploring incarceration, education, and the power of second chances. For nearly two decades, PVCC has been a leader in prison education, launching its first program at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women in 2006. Since then, the Higher Education in Prison Program has expanded to Dillwyn and Buckingham Correctional Centers, transforming the lives of over 150 graduates through quality post-secondary education.

The event will begin with a reading of student works from the PVCC Prison Creative Arts Program, offering a glimpse into the experiences and reflections of incarcerated learners. Following this, attendees will view College Behind Bars, the acclaimed Ken Burns documentary that highlights the impact of higher education in prison. The evening will conclude with a keynote address from Jesse Crosson of the Second Chancer Foundation, who will share his personal journey and advocate for the life-changing role of education in rehabilitation and reentry.

This event, held in recognition of Second Chance Month, aims to foster meaningful dialogue on the intersection of incarceration and education while celebrating the opportunities that learning can provide for individuals seeking a new path forward.

Crowdfunded Pitch Night
Wednesday April 16, 2025 7:00pm - 8:30pm EDT

The 12th Annual Crowdfunded Pitch Night showcases 10 aspiring entrepreneurs to the Charlottesville community, who will vote with their dollars. Flash pitches will share the contestant's vision with the community and inspire the crowd to action! The evening will conclude with a round of crowd voting -- YOU get to be involved! -- in support of the idea the crowd feels is most likely to be successful. The pool of money goes to the winner. This event connects culturally diverse and innovative members of the Charlottesville community to showcase Charlottesville as a hub for unity and opportunity.

Each finalist has the opportunity to raise funds both before and during the pitch night. ALL donations intended for a startup or project will go to that startup! Before the pitch night, there will be a donation portal open to contribute toward a project, and at the pitch night, the audience can purchase votes to support the projects that most inspire them. ALL monies intended for a startup will go to that startup.

In addition to the crowdfunded support, the Community Investment Collaborate (CIC) is sponsoring a grand prize winner to receive a max $5,000. A winner will be selected by a panel of judges. Additional prizes and support services from CIC and other local business owners may also be awarded.

This event is free to attend and open to the public!
